Gems & Carvings Collection
Some people collect art. I became fascinated by what existed before the art. The stone.
A piece of jade formed deep within the Earth. A crystal shaped by pressure, heat and geological time. A meteorite born before our planet existed, travelling through space for billions of years before arriving on Earth.
I wanted to understand these extraordinary materials — where they came from, what makes one specimen ordinary and another exceptional, and, above all, what happens when nature’s work meets the right artist.
That curiosity has taken me rather far.
I studied gemology, diamonds and coloured gemstones at GIA and IGI, travelled through 87 countries, visited mines and joined meteorite-hunting expeditions across some of the world’s most remote landscapes.
Along the way, I built relationships with exceptional master gem carvers, sculptors and craftsmen whose knowledge and skills are increasingly rare.
That journey became the Gems & Carvings Collection — a curated world of one-of-a-kind gemstone carvings, gemstone sculptures, rare natural minerals and meteorite art, selected and created for collectors who understand the value of the unrepeatable.
My role sits somewhere between gemologist, collector, curator and matchmaker.
I find exceptional natural material. I find the artist who understands it. And sometimes I simply have the good sense to stand back and let the two have their conversation.
Because creating a sculpture from a rare gemstone is unlike almost any other form of art.
The artist does not begin with a blank canvas or an obedient material. The stone arrives with its own colour, inclusions, transparency, fractures, structure and history — already millions, sometimes billions, of years in the making.
The finest master gem carvers do not impose themselves upon the stone.
They listen to it.
They discover the sculpture within it and make decisions that cannot be reversed. Every cut matters.
That philosophy guides every work of gemstone art I collect, commission and curate.
My curiosity has never been particularly well behaved. I am also a classically trained pianist, studied Business Law, and earned my Private Pilot’s Licence in England. Apparently, looking at the Earth wasn’t enough — I needed to see it from above as well.
Yet after all the studying, travelling, mines, deserts, expeditions and extraordinary materials I have encountered, I continually return to one simple truth:
There can only ever be one. Every natural stone is unique.
Its colour, inclusions, crystalline structure and geological history belong to that stone alone. Once a master artist transforms it into sculpture, the result becomes something that cannot be repeated — not by the same artist, not from another stone, not ever.
Another sculpture may be inspired by it. Another artist may attempt the same subject.
But this sculpture will exist only once, anywhere in the world. It is the meeting of one unique material, one artist and one moment in time.
That is what makes the finest gemstone sculpture so extraordinary: nature creates the material once; the artist has one opportunity to reveal what it can become.
The result is not an edition. It is the only one.
And perhaps, after years spent around rare stones, art and collectors, I have learned a few things worth keeping:
Nature doesn’t do copies. Neither do we.
True rarity needs no introduction. It simply needs someone who knows how to recognise it.
And my rather less philosophical rule for collecting and investing:
Never invest in anything that eats or needs repainting.
Everything else is negotiable.
Except rarity.
