Mother of Pearl, Siberian Nephrite with bronze shell
Inner shell: Chatoyant Siberian nephrite,
Outer shell: Gold plated bronze casting,
Pearl: Jadeite from California,
Base: Edwards Black nephrite from Wyoming.
Ideas for sculptures often incubate for years, waiting for the right time to hatch. An invitation to China in 2014 to exhibit my jade creations in Suzhou was the impetus to interpret the beauty of a Giant Clamshell from a novel perspective, something I had intended for years. This sculpture combines three different jades and a gold-plated bronze cast of an actual Tridacna Gigas.
