The Old Testament may be read as a chain of approach and distance in the relationship between mankind and its Creator. At the beginning of this chain stands the Fall, followed by the Expulsion from Paradise. Here God is represented by an angel who chases Adam and Eve away through the gates with a dramatic gesture and a flaming sword. They enter a future burdened by guilt and sinfulness, as the attributes to the right and left of the gates of Paradise show. Thorns and thistles will be a burden in Adam's future life as a tiller of the soil, and the snake will accompany them into that future.
