The Expulsion from Paradise (Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld)
Genesis 3, 23-24
The Old Testament may be interpreted as a chain of approach and distance concerning the relationship bettween mankind and its creator. At the beginning of this chain there is the fall followed by the expulsion from Paradise. God is represented there by an angel chasing Adam and Eve away though the gates by means of dramatic gesture and a sword of flames. They enter into a future burdened by guilt and sinfulness, witch is stanted by the attributes to the right and left of the gates of Paradise: thorns and thistles will be a burden in Adam´s future life as a tiller of the soil, and the snake will accompany them into this future.
