Nephrite Carving -Yin Yang
Nurturing the Yin, while Feeding the Yang
Gold Award winner in the 2016 Zi Gang Bei International Jade Competition in Suzhou, China.
Because of its hardness and durability, the earliest uses of jade were utilitarian, such as tools and weapons. Over time, given jade’s aesthetic beauty, these utensils became adorned with elaborate designs and took on a more ceremonial and decorative function.
I enjoy the challenge of creating unique, artistic yet fully functional items such as this ergonomically fashioned spoon and spoon-rest as a Dragon and Phoenix. Together they came to symbolize the Emperor and the Empress, and in time, the unity of marriage.
16.5cm long; 9cm deep; 15.8cm high
