Blue Topaz Sculpture – Cicada on Buds
Cicada on Buds is carved from blue topaz: a cicada, its wings folded along its back and their veins cut in fine lines, perched across two rounded buds on a short stalk. The piece expresses a subtle sense of connection, harmony and longevity.
The cicada feels safe on the buds, its beloved home, where it can be itself and discover its true potential by serving its purpose on earth: making magical melodies and spreading purity around the world. The cicada is rich in symbolism, with the recurring themes of resurrection, immortality, spiritual realisation and spiritual ecstasy; to the ancient Greeks and Romans, cicadas sang in ecstasy and were sacred to Apollo, one of the Olympian gods. The insects' long and unusual life cycles make them a fitting symbol of longevity and rebirth. How long a cicada lives depends on the species: some live two to five years, others up to 17 years.
Blue topaz is said to aid concentration, clear the mind and awaken creativity, helping writers to sit down and write without distraction; in the office or at home it is associated with good communication and harmony. Topaz is found today in Brazil, Nigeria, Australia, Myanmar and Mexico.
Topaz cleaves, or splits, easily, so it should never be cleaned in a steam or ultrasonic cleaner. It should be protected from sudden changes in temperature and from all acids, which can damage it, and blue topaz should be kept out of the sun, since heat and UV light bleach it easily.
Materials: blue topaz
Dimensions: height 6 cm
