The pendant, an Orthodox piece made in the form of an order, is dedicated to the memory of the feat of Saint John the Baptist; at its centre is an emerald carved as his head. The emerald is held by a silver shroud wrapped around it, and the pendant is crowned with an Orthodox symbol, an equilateral cross enclosed in a circle. The sides of the shroud carry the texture of fabric and are set with Orthodox crosses, filled with gold in the old technique.
A gold ribbon laid across the forehead stands for a crown, the crown of glory. From below, the face is supported by a triple lily of gold, a symbol of the Trinity and of three virtues: faith, hope and mercy. The lily was also an attribute of many saints.
On the reverse, framed in a wreath, is a silver scroll on which the jeweller inscribed the text of a prayer in Church Slavonic; in English it reads:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
