Aquamarine Sculpture – The King

$0.00

The King is a skull, hand-carved from a single 25 kg crystal of Namibian aquamarine.

Because the aquamarine is Namibian, an African folktale is told with the work. A hunter came across a skull in the desert and asked aloud what had brought it there. Talking, the skull replied. The hunter ran back to the village and told the king of his discovery, and the king, who had never in all his years heard of the dead speaking, sent his guards with the hunter to find out whether it was true, with orders to strike the hunter dead if he was lying. At the place where the skull lay the hunter asked his question again, and told the skull to speak, and all day it said nothing. As the sun set the guards cut off his head and rode home. Then the skull turned to the hunter's head and asked what had brought him there. Talking, the head replied: talking had brought it there.

Materials: Namibian aquamarine
Weight: 25 kg (the crystal)
Dimensions: 22 × 20 × 30 cm
