Balance is a heart carved and faceted in translucent rock crystal, protected by two wings of gold vermeil, each one hand-hammered. It is the first of a collection of nine gem sculptures inspired by the heart, which the artist worked on for more than nine months.
Faceted, the crystal may look like ice, but it stands for a heart kept clear and transparent with oneself and with others. The two wings stand for the duality inside everyone, good and evil, light and shadow, held in balance rather than suppressed, since one cannot exist without the other and both are embraced equally.
The collection came out of a long and difficult year of lockdown, a time the artist used to work on personal things long avoided and to heal, and which left a changed view of life: to live with an open heart, to forgive, and to feel the depth of one's emotions.
