Agate Sculpture – Bird of Joy
The sculpture shows the Alkonost, the woman-headed bird of Russian folklore, carved from a single block of agate. Her face is calm beneath a crown and simple jewellery lies at her throat, her wings soft above the large talons with which she both guards and releases the egg she is setting down; the egg is cut from Kazakhstan chalcedony. The base repeats the motion of the sea, purple waves rising and closing slowly around the egg.
The Alkonost makes sounds so beautiful that those who hear them forget everything they know and want nothing more. She lays her eggs on a beach and rolls them into the sea; when they hatch, a thunderstorm sets in and the sea becomes impossible to cross.
Materials: agate (the bird, from one block), Kazakhstan chalcedony (the egg), amethyst and bronze stand
Dimensions: height 35 cm
