Quartzite Sculpture – Elephant City
An elephant carrying a city on its back, hand-made from quartzite, bronze and silvering. The silver city is worked in detail: houses, windows, towers and turrets, a large gate and banners flying, all that makes up a whole city, carried on an animal whose ears, tusks and trunk are as demanding to carve as the narrowing towers and their delicate banners.
Behind the piece lies the history of a Jewish city whose treasures were ransacked, stolen and carried away. Seen head-on, the elephant appears to be wearing a crown, which may stand for the dominant status of the largest of animals, or for the authority and power of its owner and master. Seen from the side, the same crown becomes a heavy burden on the back of a beast of burden, and the animal is visibly struggling with it, whether with the weight of the treasure or with the moral weight of the sacrilege it is part of.
Materials: quartzite, bronze, silvering
Dimensions: 52 × 50 × 35 cm (height × width × depth)
Weight: 27 kg
