China is a woman's bust, the collective image of the country, hand-carved from Belarusian flint, Picasso jasper, Irkutsk jade, chrysoprase, Gazgan marble and honey quartz, with silver and gilding.
The detail is close, and some of it is almost hidden: dragons and fish, a traditional pagoda set in the hair above the forehead and adorned with a jewel, dangling earrings, delicate flowers on the fan, and the textures and colours of the clothes. Against all that, the face is pure and simple, pale and very feminine, with almost transparent lips and a thin white collar framing it. Depending on where it is seen from, the gaze changes from deep and dark to a fiery red.
