The Humpbacked Horse rears in the levade, carved from a single block of flint. In battle the levade lifted the rider high enough to see the ground around him, and it stands here for a view of what is to come.
The horse carries a long list of meanings: power, freedom, balance, wisdom, desire. It changed the way people worked, travelled and fought, shaped civilisations and discoveries, and long stood for wealth and power, as engines are still rated in horsepower. The stone has its own meaning. Flint was one of the most important materials of early civilisations, used for the majority of tools and, then as now, for making fire, and like the horse it stands for desire.
Materials: one block of flint
Dimensions: height 60 cm
In private collection.
