Carved in black jade, jasper and cacholong, with silver, gold and rubies, Charon shows a figure in a black cloak and a tricorn hat, his face behind a white long-beaked mask, standing in a long black boat, his red-gloved hands resting on the back of a buttoned red seat. The prow and the stern rise in gold scrolls; a chain rail runs along each side and a long oar lies across the hull.
