A spoon and a spoon rest carved in Wyoming nephrite as a dragon and a phoenix, ergonomically shaped and fully functional, on a base of black walnut with a white marble top. The work is called Nurturing the Yin, while Feeding the Yang. It won a Gold Award at the 2016 Zi Gang Bei International Jade Competition in Suzhou, China.
Because jade is hard and durable, its earliest uses were utilitarian, as tools and weapons. Over time, given the beauty of the stone, such utensils were adorned with elaborate designs and took on a more ceremonial and decorative function. The dragon and the phoenix came to symbolise the Emperor and the Empress and, in time, the unity of marriage.
