Nephrite Jade Sculpture – Medusa

$0.00

A Medusa carved in nephrite jade, a work that took nearly two years to finish. The head carries 27 snakes in all, each modelled on one of the most venomous species in the world, among them the Indian taipan, the black mamba, the king cobra, the banded krait, Russell's viper, the saw-scaled viper and the yellow-bellied sea snake. The sculpture rests on a natural thick slab of agate quartz.

Jade is tough, and harder than many minerals; its texture and durability make it an ideal carving material, and for centuries it has held unusual shapes and intricate detail without chipping or breaking. Ancient cultures regarded jade as a divine gift from heaven and believed it to be the vehicle of communication with the unseen power of the universe.

The Book of Verse says that when one thinks of a wise man, his merits appear to be like jade.

Materials: nephrite jade, agate
Dimensions: 24 × 22 cm
