The sculpture is carved in obsidian, with carnelian eyes: a monkey seated upright and facing forward, one hand raised to its chin and the other arm folded across its body, the toes of both feet showing beneath. The coat is worked in strands over the head, shoulders and arms, and the face is modelled with a heavy brow and fine wrinkles.
