A satyr sits on a chest, a stump at his side. The body is Belarusian flint and the flaps of his toga Brazilian agate; the hair is black agate, the horns tiger's eye, and the eyes are set with quartz, topaz and jasper. The fruits heaped around him are amethyst, flint, smoky quartz and citrine. The stump is chalcedony, and the base and casket are chalcedony with silver-plated bronze. The casket holds two containers for wine and three glasses of jade and silver set with topaz.
The satyr belongs to ancient Greek mythology, where he is associated with Dionysus, the god of wine, which is why the casket beneath him is made to hold wine. The profusion of fruit marks him as a symbol of fertility and as the vital force of nature, which regenerates season after season, year after year, in an unending cycle.
