Rock Crystal Sculpture – Light and Shadow

$0.00

Light and Shadow shows two winged infants, hand-carved from rock crystal and obsidian, their eyes set with aquamarine and green tourmaline with rock crystal, all metalwork in gold vermeil. The base is chrysocolla with natural botryoidal white aragonite standing for clouds.

The work asks an old question: are people good or bad by nature? For thousands of years philosophers have argued whether people are born good and corrupted by society, or born bad and held in check by it. Babies come closest to an answer, being human with the least cultural influence, though nothing has been proved. Upbringing teaches the division of the world into good and evil, and of the self with it: the traits society accepts become the Persona, the face shown to the world, and those it does not are hidden away as the Shadow. The two are inseparable.

Materials: rock crystal, obsidian, aquamarine, green tourmaline, gold vermeil; base of chrysocolla and white aragonite
Dimensions: 75 × 50 × 60 cm
Weight: 70 kg
