Multi-Gemstone Sculpture – Yashka-Ataman

$0.00

Yashka-Ataman shows a Cossack boy in a tall black fur cap and a dark blue coat with rows of cartridge pockets across the chest, red shoulder boards and red cuffs, a dagger in a chased scabbard on his belt and a whip in his hand. He stands on a stone base carved as mossy ground. The figure is assembled from jasper, chrysoprase, agate, tiger's eye, dolerite and uvarovite.

Officially, the date of foundation of the Don Cossacks in Russia is considered to be 3 January 1570, when Tsar Ivan the Terrible sent his letter to the Cossacks. The Don Cossacks are, however, mentioned in chronicles as early as 1502.

An ataman is the eldest in the family and the leader of the Cossacks. From childhood the future chieftain was taught the use of the dagger, the sabre and the whip, and horseback riding, together with the ability to make the right decision quickly and respect for his elders.

Materials: jasper, chrysoprase, agate, tiger's eye, dolerite, Gazgan marble, cacholong, uvarovite, obsidian
Dimensions: height 23 cm
